Week 10 Wrap-Up

Hi Everybody,

It's hard to believe that we're almost done!

Thanks for a great final crit--all of the hard work that you guys have been doing really shows in your final prints.

This coming Saturday is our final exhibition! We will be meeting in our normal classroom. Be on time, since we won't be staying there vey long. Feel free to bring any snacks or refreshments you'd like to have during the exhibition. I'll be bringing a few little things myself.

The exhibition is open to friends and family from 12:00 to 1:00, and will be in Room 1103 at 2 West 13th Street.

On to this week's homework!:

1-You will be turning in all of your final work next class on a DVD or USB drive which you will not be getting back. If you don't turn it in next class, you won't receive credit for the semester.

Your DVD/USB Drive needs to have the following:
-1 folder containing your final series photographs (20 minimum)
-1 folder containing all of the homework assignments

I want the highest quality files that you have, with all of the work in tact. This means that I want PSDs or TIFs with the layers intact if you worked in Photoshop. If you worked only in Camera Raw or Lightroom, I want the XMP or DNG files as well. If you aren't sure what I mean by this, please contact me.

2-Before next class, post your full series to the blog. Label the post with your name. The blog will be projected during the exhibition.

NYC Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Hey everyone!

Just a quick head's up--the deadline to submit to the NYC Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is coming up in less than two weeks on December 16th.

It's a fantastic opportunity, and I encourage you all to submit! Here is a little more information:

How are the New York City Scholastic Awards and the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards connected?

The NYC Scholastic Awards is a regional affiliate of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  There more than 100 regional affiliates serving their communities across the country.  The NYC Scholastic Awards serves Kings, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx and Richmond counties.  Last year we received over 9,000 submissions.  The top works receive either a Gold Key, Silver Key, or an Honorable Mention.  The Gold Key works are automatically sent to National Judging which is run by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.  National Medalists are invited to NYC to take part in National Events, which include exhibitions in NYC as well as a ceremony in Carnegie Hall.  There are numerous scholarships available at the National level.  Please click here to learn more.

Who can participate in the Awards?

Participation in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is open to students:

• in grades 7-12 for the 2015/2016 school year;
  

  Tashawn Davis, PIGS, Digital Art, Grade 12, Age 17, Edward R. Murrow High School, Brooklyn, NY
• enrolled in public, private, parochial, home school or participating in other educational programs;
• in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada & American Schools abroad.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards DO NOT have academic and disciplinary standing requirements. Work created in the spring semester of 2015 is eligible for submission, so long as the student hasn’t already graduated. Students should submit in their current grade level. Seniors who will graduate mid-term in December 2015 may participate.

When do submissions open?

Submissions opened on September 15th, 2015 for the 2016 Awards season.  Submissions close on Wednesday, December 16th, 2015 at 11:59pm E.S.T.

How do I submit my work?

Go to www.artandwriting.org and click “LOGIN” to access the Scholastic Awards Online Registration System. Here you’ll be prompted to create a new account if this is your first time participating in the Awards or login if you participated in the Scholastic Awards last year.

Once you’ve created an account you’ll have access to information about the categories of art and writing, how to prepare your work and your regional guidelines and deadlines. You’ll have to know your school’s ZIP code to connect with the NYC region.

Can I submit multiple pieces in one category?  Can I submit to both Art & Writing?

Yes! and Yes!  You are welcome and encouraged to submit as many pieces you would like in as many categories as you would like, but repeat submissions are not permitted.

I am still creating my submission.  Should I wait to register until I have finished?

We highly recommend that you create an account as soon as possible. This will allow your regional affiliate to notify you with updates about the program as well as provide deadline reminders.

After you’ve created your account you can log back into the system at www.artandwriting.org/ors/registration.

Individual submissions: $5 per submission

Portfolio Submissions (available for Seniors): $20 per portfolio

Hi Everybody,

I hope that you all had a great Thanksgiving!

I am very sorry this email is coming to you so late—I got really sick after last class, and I spent most of the last week laid up in bed, but I’m on the mend now.

You should have received edits from me in the last few days. If you did not, I did not receive your statement and need it right away.

For the rest of you, I need your latest edit no later than Wednesday night.

This week is our final critique. There are two important things happening:

1—You will be showing 10 new images from your series to the class.

2—You will be turning in 10 final, full-size images for the exhibition. This can be a mix of new and old images, as long as they are related to your series. I will have a hard-drive in class for you to save them to. IF I DO NOT GET THE IMAGES FROM YOU SATURDAY, YOU WILL NOT BE IN THE SHOW.

If you need more time to edit your images, or if you would like to discuss which images to include, I have reserved a computer lab for us after class from 1-3pm in Room N003 at 66 5th Ave.

Finally, if you want to turn in your final next class you can. You need to give me a DVD or USB drive with 20+ images from your project and all of your homework assignments. These need to be turned in as the highest quality file you have (PSD or TIF). If you did Photoshop work, I want them turned in with all layers intact.
