W. Eugene Smith's "Country Doctor"

Here are a few selections from W. Eugene Smith's landmark photo essay, "Country Doctor", first published in Life Magazine in 1948. Smith spent 23 days with rural  Dr. Ernest Ceriani. Smith's photo essay remains an powerful example of documentary photography, seemingly very simple in scope but giving the viewer an as-then-unprecedented intimate view into the daily life of a general practitioner.

You can see the entire photo essay here.
