O. Winston Link, Link and Them with Night Flash Equipment, 1956 |
We are now at the halfway point of the program---great job so far. Just keep up the pace (and try to stay healthy).
Today, we spent the morning working hands-on with studio strobes on-set in one of the school studios. You all were making some great photos--please post one or two of your favorites when you can.
In the meantime, if you'd like a handy reference guide to basic studio equipment (as well as a concise explanation of lighting ratios), take a look at this article here. Additionally, if you are interested in adding simple, accessible lighting options (that are still powerful enough for a pro studio) to your gear kit, take a look at these.
In the afternoon, we visited the MoMA to see New Order: Art and Technology in the 21st Century. It is a challenging show, and I really appreciated hearing your thoughts on the work.
On to tonight's homework:
- First of all, take some vitamin c and get some rest! Whatever bug is going around seems to be doing some real damage and I don't want everyone to be out sick by the end of the week.
- ...so with that being said, there aren't any major assignments for tonight. Use tonight to get caught up on missed posts, work on your series or to work on your Week 2 Project
- However: I would also like a short (2-3 paragraph) free writing from you before tomorrow (by email, not posted on the blog) reacting to today's show. Specifically, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the relationship of technology and technological mediation on photography and video. Specifically, how does technology relate to your work? How does it influence or mediate it? What does the future look like? Is it a good or a bad thing? This isn't meant to be a formal essay--I'm most interested in your thoughts and how you conceptualize these ideas in writing. Take it seriously, but keep it easy, too.
That's it for tonight. In the interest of keeping everybody's health in tact (and giving the sick ones a chance to recover), we are postponing the Coney Island trip until next week, Instead, we will be visiting the Whitney Biennial in the afternoon. Be sure to buy a student ticket (for the 1:30 time slot) sometime tonight to beat the crowds. You can find a link for ticket sales here.
That's it for now. See you tomorrow!
