Final Exhibition & Portfolio Details

Mike Brodie, from the series A Period of Juvenile Prosperity

Here is a break down of what is due over the next two days and how to turn it in:

All prints must be completed before Friday's class. We will not have class time to print tomorrow, so any last minute printing will need to be done on your own time.

Final Artist Statements are due by end of day on Thursday. You will be receiving one more round of edits from me between tonight and tomorrow morning.

Due by FRIDAY morning (last day of class!):
  • A USB drive or DVD labelled with your first and last name, containing the following:
    • A folder containing the 20+ final images of your series.
      • Should be highest-quality versions of these images, ideally saved as processed TIFs
    • A folder containing all of your homework assignments, separated by week.
      • These should be your original files or processed TIFs, and not images you copied off the blog.
    • A folder containing your exported video (exported as H.264)
    • Your Artist Statement
Please see the photo below illustrating how to organize your USB.

Please note that there will not be time during class on Friday to work on putting everything together.

In order to receive credit for the semester, I have to have all of this by Friday latest.

The final USB can be turned in tomorrow if you have everything ready early.

Week 3 Day 3 Wrap-Up

Christian Sanna, Fighter backed by the doctor after his K.O, Dzamandzar, Nosy Be, 2015

Hi Everybody.

Today we spent the day printing for our final exhibition. Everything is coming together nicely and I'm really looking forward to Open Studios.

Today was our last opportunity to make prints during class time. Any extra printing that you may need to do will need to happen on your own time outside of class. Keep in mind building and lab hours and don't forget that all prints will need to be finished before Friday. We won't have any time for last-minute prints on Friday.

Tonight, please get any last minute video clips that you may need to wrap up your projects. You may need to do some video editing tonight to ensure you have enough time tomorrow.

Before the end of the evening, email me the second draft of your artist statement (~1 paragraph about your photo series and 1 paragraph about your video). I've posted additional resources on the blog if you need some help.

We will be using the AM session tomorrow to complete editing our videos. Make sure that you leave enough time to export your videos for the afternoon session.

Tomorrow afternoon will be our final critique (critiquing your full series and your completed video project). We will need the entire afternoon for the critique, so everything MUST be completed by lunchtime, no exceptions.

For tomorrow's critique, you will need the following:
  • Full series (20+ images), separated into a folder
  • Exported video project
That's it for now--please reach out with any questions you may have before tomorrow.

See you in the morning!

Week 3 Day 2 Wrap-Up

Alanna Fields, Untitled (Blue), 2019
Hey Everybody!

We're getting down to the wire!

Today, we spent the morning working on prepping our files for printing as well as taking a quick look at printing on the Epson printers.

Tomorrow, we will have a fell day in the printing lab to prepare prints for our exhibition.

As a reminder, we will begin class in the lab itself (Room 703).

We also had a visit from Alanna Fields sharing more about her process and work with us. You can see more of her work here.

That's all for tonight--if you haven't already, you will be receiving edits on suggestions for your artist statement fro me shortly. In the meantime, be sure to bring all of your files with you tomorrow so we can work as efficiently as possible tomorrow.

See you tomorrow!

Week 3 Day 1 Wrap-Up

Richard Avedon, Ronald Fischer "Beekeeper", Davis, California (“In The American West”), 1981
Hi Everyone!

It's hard to believe this is our final week.

Today we visited the Avedon Foundation to learn more about the work of Richard Avedon.

If you'd like to learn more about the Avedon Foundation's internship program, please contact info@avedonfoundation.org or let me know and I'll put you in touch directly with the internship coordinator.

We also discussed printing for the final exhibition. Remember, if you plan to make any prints larger than 17" wide on the short side, they will need to be submitted by early evening tomorrow at the latest.

For more information about these prints (including available sizes, prices, and how to format and submit your files), please click on the following link here.

For tomorrow, be sure to bring all of your files with you. We will be doing a printing demo in the morning and working on prepping files for the exhibition (as well as taking a deeper dive into Photoshop) in the afternoon.

See you tomorrow!

Week 2 Day 5

He-Ji Shin, Kanye II, 2018
Hello All--

That's it for Week 2! We are almost finished. It's hard to believe.

We're on the home stretch. Next week we'll be taking a couple field trips and looking at some new tools and techniques, but for the most part we'll be concentrating on putting together your final edit and video for the exhibition.

Now for this weekend's homework:
  • Building on the feedback you got from your peers, continue shooting for your series and your video project. This is the last block of open time you'll have for working on your project, so use it well. You should have most (if not all) of your video footage captured by the end of the weekend.
  • Begin writing the first formal draft of your artist statement and email it to me before Monday's class. This should be more structured than your last writing. Don't worry about it being perfect--we will be going through two rounds of revision after this to get it in perfect shape.
  • Complete the Week 2 Project: Self / Reveal (Self Portrait) project to share in class on Monday. This should be a tight edit (minimum 3, maximum 5). Have them sorted into a folder and ready to view at the start of class--there won't be time for you to work on them in class.
  • Finally, complete and post any homework assignments you may have missed. Anything not posted by the start of Monday's class will be considered not done.
As always, please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions, need any feedback, or run into any trouble with your projects. See you next week!
